One line: king-queen-eight-four

Crazy 4 Poker deals you five cards and plays your best four. You make one decision: fold, bet 1x, or with a pair of aces or better, bet up to 3x.

Fold, 1x or 3x

The dealer opens with king high. K-Q-8-4 is the weakest four-card hand worth a Play bet. We checked every one of the 2,598,960 possible hands against all 1,533,939 hands the dealer could hold: these three rules cost 0.0001% against perfect play.

3xA pair of aces or better
1xAny other pair, or K-Q-8-4 or better
FoldK-Q-8-3 and below, and anything queen high or lower

Always bet the full 3x with aces or better. 3x beats 1x on every one of those hands, and 2x is never the best bet. Anything below a pair of aces can only bet 1x.

Why fold at all? Folding gives up the Ante and the Super Bonus, two bets. Below K-Q-8-4, a 1x Play bet loses even more on average than that.

The fifth card matters a hair. Your fifth card can't be in the dealer's hand, which shifts the odds slightly. On 1,440 hands the exact count disagrees with the rule: K-Q-7-6 with a 3, 4 or 5 left over is worth a 1x bet, and K-Q-8-4 with a 2 or 3 left over is a fold. The difference is too small to matter, so the trainer counts either play as right on those hands.

How a hand plays

  1. Bet the Ante and the Super BonusBoth are required and always equal. Queens Up is an optional extra.
  2. Five cards eachYou see yours; the dealer's are face down. Each hand plays its best four cards.
  3. Fold or playFolding loses the Ante and the Super Bonus. Playing puts up a Play bet of 1x the Ante, or up to 3x with a pair of aces or better.
  4. The dealer opens with king highIf not, the Play bet pays 1 to 1 and the Ante pushes.
  5. ShowdownHigher hand wins the Ante and Play at 1 to 1; ties push. The Super Bonus pays its table on a straight or better whatever the dealer holds.

Hand ranks and odds

With four cards, three of a kind is rarer than a flush or a straight, so it ranks higher. Odds are for your best four of five cards.

Super Bonus and Queens Up

The Super Bonus is part of the main game and already counted in its 3.42%. Queens Up is a true side bet with a higher edge. The trainer deals the common 50-40-7 table; switch tables under Paytables to match your casino.

Queens Up tableStraight flushThree of a kindHouse edge
50-40-7-4-3-2-1 (this table)40 to 17 to 16.78%
50-30-8-4-3-2-130 to 18 to 15.32%
50-40-8-4-3-2-140 to 18 to 14.52%
50-30-9-4-3-2-130 to 19 to 13.06%

Read the felt. Three of a kind is the payout that moves the edge: 2.26% of hands are trips, so each extra unit on it is worth about 2.3%. Every table pays four of a kind 50, flushes 4, straights 3, two pair 2 and a pair of queens or better 1 to 1.

Folding and Queens Up. The trainer settles Queens Up as lost when you fold, and house rules on this vary. With the book's strategy it never comes up: every pair is a Play bet.

At the table

  • Two bets to startThe Ante and Super Bonus go out together, so a $10 Ante puts $20 on the felt before the deal.
  • Budget for 3xA hand with aces puts five bets in action. Bring about 40 to 50 Antes for a session.
  • Place the Play bet to playPut chips in the Play circle: equal to your Ante, or up to three times it with aces or better. To fold, slide your cards to the dealer.
  • Best four, not fiveYour fifth card doesn't count. A flush or straight needs only four cards.
  • The Super Bonus rides alongIt is paid on a straight or better even when the dealer beats you.
  • Check the table versionThe paytable on the felt is what counts.

Mistakes that cost real money

  • Betting 1x with acesA pair of aces or better is always a 3x bet.
  • Playing queen-high handsThe dealer opens too often. Fold them.
  • Folding small pairsEvery pair is at least a 1x bet.
  • Queens Up without reading the paytableThe same bet costs 3.06% to 6.78% depending on the trips pay.
